How to Dry Brush for Self-Care

If you’ve never tried dry brushing, you’re missing out. Dry brushing is one of the most affordable and effective ways to dial up your detox routine. Not only does dry brushing leave your skin smooth and glowing from head to toe, but it’s also a powerful way to boost your lymphatic system.

You especially need dry brushing if you sit at work all day, or maybe find it difficult to exercise as much as you like to. No matter what your level of fitness is, dry brushing is an amazing way to get quick results you can see and feel.

What Is Dry Brushing?

Dry brushing is the practice of brushing dry skin, before your bath or shower, with a natural bristle brush. This provides major exfoliation and helps stimulate your lymphatic system.

The lymphatic system helps rid your body of cellular waste and toxins. However, unlike your cardiovascular system which relies on your heart to keep things moving, your lymphatic system needs muscular movement to keep circulation going. That’s why waste accumulation in the body happens when you don’t exercise enough. And while it is important to exercise regularly, dry brushing is something that anyone can benefit from to help improve detoxification. Daily dry brushing can help your body get rid of toxins more effectively over time.

Easy-To-Follow Steps for Dry Brushing

  • Dry brushing is always done on dry skin with a dry brush. No oiling up!
  • Hold the brush in your hand and stroke upwards towards your heart.
  • Start at your feet and move up your body, spending about 30 seconds on each body part.
  • Move from feet to calves, then to the upper legs, the backs of your thighs, butt, and then move to your arms. Start at your hands and work up to the shoulders.
  • Move to your back (where you can reach), your stomach, chest, and upper chest.
  • Stimulate the lymph nodes under the armpits with gentle, upward strokes.
  • The whole process should take about five minutes. Practice year-round.

Please note that if you’ve had breast cancer and your lymph nodes were removed, it’s a good idea to check in with your doctor before you start dry brushing. Your physician may ask you to adjust your technique a bit.

How To Pick A Dry Brush

Choose a natural bristle brush with firm bristles for the best results. While most brushes on the market are made with either sisal or coconut fibers, Pursoma’s Detox Beauty Body Brush is made from all-natural jute fiber. Jute is soft enough to protect your skin, but still hard enough to drain the lymph.

Since sustainable jute is difficult to find, we can only make a limited number of body brushes each year. We source our jute fiber from a woman-owned and operated farm in Sri Lanka. All of our dry brushes are made entirely by hand. Our jute is ethically harvested and non-GMO. Our brushes contain no sodium lauryl sulfate, dyes, or parabens, and are vegan and cruelty-free.

Just five minutes of dry brushing each day can help increase blood flow and cellular detoxification, resulting in better health and a gorgeous glow. If you want to feel deeply rejuvenated with baby smooth skin, add this simple practice to your regular self-care routine.
